About Chaz Newton-Smith
Born in Bristol and proudly dyslexic, I’ve always seen the world a little differently. School was a challenge, but creativity gave me a voice. I spent a formative year as a youth worker in Swansea before taking a foundation course at Filton College. That led me to a Fine Art degree at Northampton University, where I began to explore my visual language more seriously.
Eventually, I moved to Manchester, working part-time in just about every job imaginable while continuing to pursue life as an artist. But everything changed in December 2018, when I was run over at high speed. I suffered a brain haemorrhage, fell into a coma for three days, and began a long and difficult recovery — a five-year journey of rebuilding not only my health but my entire creative practice.
Now, I’m back to painting full-time, working with renewed purpose and depth.
I’m proud to be represented by The Springfield House Art Gallery, a stunning space in a restored former mill. It’s an exciting chapter — and you’re warmly invited to visit the gallery, view my latest work, and purchase pieces directly in person.
