Waves – Digital Artwork by Chaz Newton-Smith

Waves is one of those pieces that just sort of happened. I didn’t plan to make it, and I definitely didn’t wake up that day with a big idea in mind. I was just messing about on my iPad using Adobe Fresco — a vector art app I use a lot — while watching telly. It was completely unplanned, and maybe that’s why it’s one of the pieces people connect with most. I get more people asking to buy a print of this than almost anything else I’ve made.

I’m heavily dyslexic, so I often find it hard to explain things with words — that’s why I make art. Sometimes I hide words and phrases inside the artwork itself, layered into the strokes or tucked into the background. Waves has that too, if you look closely. It’s something I do in a lot of my pieces, kind of like speaking through the image.

A lot of my work is bold, expressive, and emotional. I love combining that with elements of city life, buildings, movement, and colour. But sometimes the best stuff happens when I’m not trying too hard — when it just flows naturally. Waves is exactly that.

You can buy a print of Waves in different sizes, and I can arrange for it to be framed and delivered straight to your door. It’s available now in my shop.
